An interdisciplinary monograph by dr Tomasz Snarski from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk entitled 'Kościół katolicki wobec kary śmierci. Między prawem a filozofią i teologią' (TN: The Catholic Church and the Death Penalty. Between Law, Philosophy and Theology') has been published in a series of publications entitled Biblioteka Więzi. - The author's most interesting contribution to the discussion on the death penalty is his insistence on the place of mercy as a social virtue - we read on the publisher's website.
The work is dedicated to the memory of late prof. dr hab. Jarosław Warylewski from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, educator of generations of criminal lawyers, an advocate of the idea of humanism in criminal law and an opponent of the death penalty.
- 'Dr Tomasz Snarski confronts the law, of which he is a scientific advocate, with the message of the Gospel, with which he identifies himself,' - pr. Andrzej Draguła wrote about the book on the publisher's website. He stresses that the work is a very successful attempt to collect arguments, present positions and show the state of the debate on carrying out the death penalty, also in its historical development.
In his opinion, the most interesting contribution of the author to the discussion on the use of capital punishment is his insistence on the place of mercy as a social virtue, what is more - on taking mercy into account within legal thinking and implementation of justice by civil authorities.
