Transport from a historical perspective will be the topic of the meeting, to which you are invited by the Academic PhD Club of History of the University of Gdańsk.
The National Student-Doctoral Research Conference will take place on March 19, 2021, online.
Three years ago, when the first conference was organised, it was thought that it would not be a topic for a large symposium. - 'However, it turned out that the history of transport is a very catchy topic, and the people who deal with it are a group of true enthusiasts, using their knowledge in scientific and popularisation activities,' - inform the organisers.
The programme of the all-day conference will include speeches devoted both to the distant history of transport, such as the wheeled vehicles of the Indus Valley; and to completely contemporary problems and transport solutions of cities such as Gdańsk, Wrocław, Kraków or Słupsk.
Among the topics proposed by the speakers will be those related to means of transport in modern times in the Republic of Poland, journeys made by monarchs or river transport in medieval Bydgoszcz, military transport during the November Uprising and the first trams in Gdańsk after the Second World War.
The topics of the presentations will also include the etymology of terminology related to urban transport in selected languages, with particular attention to metonymy, the Wandering of Marian icons/paintings in wartime or the Jewish emigration tourism from Poland to Palestine in the interwar period, and even the history of Polish transport in the context of hitchhiking and carpooling.
The conference is held under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Gdańsk, Gdańsk Buses and Trams and the University of Gdańsk Radio MORS. Due to the pandemic, the conference will be conducted online via the MS Teams platform.
