The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence is now accepting applications for four-year doctoral studies. This unique international research institution, bringing together 23 European Union member states, offers four programmes leading to a doctoral degree in the following fields: Economics, Law, History and Civilisation, Political and Social Sciences. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2026.
The EUI's objective is to provide doctoral and post-doctoral education and to conduct advanced research in areas of particular importance to the development of Europe. The EUI offers four-year doctoral programmes and post-doctoral fellowships through the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme, which is the largest programme of its kind in the world.
Located among the picturesque hills of Fiesole, overlooking Florence, the EUI hosts a diverse and international academic community. More than 1,000 researchers from over 100 countries continue their education, research and work here. Their diverse backgrounds stimulate lively debate and the exchange of knowledge.
Each year, around 1,500 candidates apply for approximately 150 places available in the doctoral programme. The research conducted at the Institute is transnational and interdisciplinary. In this respect, it is an institution that draws on the best Renaissance traditions of Florence. Since 1986, the EUI has housed the Historical Archives of the European Union.
Numerous seminars, debates, conferences and lectures are held here, attended by eminent figures from the world of science and politics, journalists, intellectuals and officials from EU institutions. Every year, the EUI organises a conference entitled ‘The State of the Union’, during which the President of the European Commission delivers a speech on the state of the European Union and its current challenges. Poland began its cooperation with the EUI in 2000. Five years later, Polish citizens were given the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies there. Poland has representation on the High Council that manages the Institute. The Polish government funds scholarships for our doctoral students.
