Mobbing, discrimination, communication abuse, abuse of position – how can we recognise undesirable behaviour in the academic environment? How can we counteract it? A catalogue of good practices, prepared by the Office of the Ombudsman for Equal Treatment and Anti-Mobbing at the University of Gdańsk, may help with this.

Where did the idea for the catalogue come from?

‘The idea of promoting desirable behaviours by creating a catalogue of good practices emerged right at the start of our Office’s existence, because we believe that this kind of ‘soft law’ can be effective and helpful in building an academic culture conducive to combating discrimination and bullying at the University of Gdańsk - explains the Ombudsman for Equal Treatment and Anti-Mobbing dr hab. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska, prof. UG.

Ultimately, “The Catalogue of Good Practices for Counteracting Undesirable Behaviours at the University of Gdańsk” was made available to users in May this year. The publication serves as a practical guide to recognising and countering undesirable behaviours in the academic environment.

The publication addresses issues such as:

  • definitions and examples of undesirable behaviour,
  • information on protection procedures for staff, PhD students and undergraduates,
  • a description of preventive, educational and support measures,
  • procedures for reporting irregularities and information on the stages of the investigation process,
  • principles for safeguarding mental and physical well-being,
  • information on important documents, contact details and equality initiatives at the University of Gdańsk.
Who can use the catalogue?

The catalogue is intended for all staff, students and PhD students at the University of Gdańsk. Prof. Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska also hopes that it will serve to promote information about the measures taken at the University of Gdańsk amongst other higher education institutions.

‘As the Ombudsman for Equal Treatment and Anti-Mobbing, I believe that this issue should be a constant focus of attention and monitoring by the university authorities, including at the level of specific faculties and organisational units of the University of Gdańsk,’ she adds.

The document will be updated regularly. We encourage you to download and read the publication!

The catalogue is available in Polish and English.
