- 'Lower teaching workload in the new academic year will enable academic staff at the University of Gdansk to intensify their activities related to, among others, scientific research. This is the next step in the implementation of our Human Resources Development Policy,' - emphasises the Rector prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski.
Taking care of the academic staff development is the priority task of the University of Gdańsk. In this area, the University's activities are subordinated to the mission, vision and values defined in the UG Development Strategy for 2020-2025 and the principles of the European Charter for Researchers. The strategic actions of UG - implementation of successive changes within HR Excellence in Research, adoption of the UG Personnel Development Policy and a new system of assessing the performance of academic staff - respond to the real and repeatedly reported needs of the entire academic community, sorting out the issues of a scientific career and appreciating the value of the teaching path in the competencies of the academic staff of the University of Gdańsk.
In the new period of scientific activity evaluation starting (2022-2025) and given the gradual increase in the number of teachers in the teaching staff group, it becomes necessary to define new dimensions of the teaching workload at UG.
- 'The main intention of lowering the working hours for assistant professors and university professors in the research and teaching staff group is to enable them to intensify their scientific activity,' - said Rector prof. Piotr Stepnowski. - 'Moreover, persons particularly involved in research activities may benefit from a reduction of the teaching salary due to the implementation of a project or authorship of outstanding scientific publications. Especially these two groups of positions are obliged, by the UG Staff Development Policy, to further academic promotion, which may be significantly hindered by excessive teaching loads. Hence, in the case of teachers in the group of research and teaching staff, a maximum number of overtime hours has also been introduced, which in the coming academic year has been set at 120 hours and will eventually reach 60 hours by the academic year 2024/25.'
On the other hand, in the case of teachers employed in the group of teaching staff, the main reason for lowering the teaching load of assistant professors, university professors and professors is to enable those teachers to perform the tasks they are obliged to do under the rules of periodic evaluation in the scope of the so-called individual teaching achievements.
Another novelty is the supplementation of the system of teaching discounts. Apart from those resulting from holding managerial positions within the university and outside it, as well as project management, starting from the following academic year it will also be possible to reduce the teaching load of the most scientifically active academic teachers who have demonstrated outstanding publication activities in the previous year.
