79 employees of the University of Gdańsk received state distinctions from the hands of the Deputy Governor of Pomerania and the Rector of the UG.

Applications for the following state distinctions: the Golden Cross of Merit, the Silver Cross of Merit, the Bronze Cross of Merit and the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals for Long Service are awarded by the state authorities at the request of an institution, namely the University of Gdańsk. The criteria to be met are strictly defined. Such decorations honour professional achievements and contributions to the development of the university and, consequently, our country. They can only be handed out by a representative of the authorities under the authorisation of the President of the Republic of Poland.

The merits of the employees of the University of Gdańsk were emphasised in their speeches by both the Vice-Governor of Pomerania, Mariusz Łuczyk, and the Rector, prof. Piotr Stepnowski.

The Vice-Governor, who following the ceremony pinned the distinctions, congratulated the staff and authorities of the University on its development.

The Rector, prof. Piotr Stepnowski, also stressed that this hard work for our Alma Mater is also reflected in the results of the rankings. - 'Meetings such as this make me happy. I am happy to be able to thank you for your effort and commitment, but I will say straight away that I ask for more. Such is the role of a rector,' - he added in conclusion.

The ceremony was accompanied by classical music performed by a string duo.

Cross of Merit

Established in 1923, the Cross of Merit is awarded to individuals who have rendered meritorious service to the state or citizens by performing acts exceeding the scope of their ordinary duties and bringing considerable benefit to the state or citizens, by performing sacrificial public service, by rendering sacrificial aid and by engaging in charitable activities. The Cross of Merit may be awarded to the same person at any rank twice. A period of at least 3 years should elapse before a Cross of Merit of a higher rank is awarded. Derogation from this rule is allowed exceptionally.

It is divided into three degrees:

I degree Gold Cross of Merit,

II degree Silver Cross of Merit,

III degree Bronze Cross of Merit.

Medal for Long Service

Established in 1938 and reinstated in 2007, it is awarded for exemplary, exceptionally conscientious performance of professional duties in the service of the State.

The Long Service Medal is divided into three grades:

I degree - Gold Medal for Long Service,

II degree - Silver Medal for Long Service,

III degree - Bronze Medal for Long Service,
