Science and education for sustainable development - international scientific conference at the University of Gdańsk

The Centre for Sustainable Development of the University of Gdańsk (CZRUG) invites you to the international scientific conference 'Science and Education for Sustainable Development', which will take place on November 24-25, 2022 in Gdańsk.

The conference aims to present research results, exchange experiences, share good practices and integrate the scientific community dealing with sustainable development, taking into account all its four pillars (Social, Economic, Environmental, Human).

'The changes taking place around us are very dynamic. We are living in times increasingly described as the epicentre of a complex crisis. Today's global challenges are forcing us to build resilience to crises. The essence of sustainability is to meet needs without compromising the ability of future generations to thrive. In times of growing crises, this concept absolutely needs to be reconsidered and redefined,' - says the University of Gdańsk Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Development dr hab. Sylwia Mrozowska, prof. UG.

The conference promotes a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach to the issue of sustainable development and enables a critical discussion of the research conducted and initiatives taken.

- 'During the conference, we plan to share the experiences of Polish and foreign universities in implementing sustainable development goals. Dissemination of good practices will help shorten the time to implement changes in cooperation with local communities to make universities and the socio-economic environment more environmentally friendly. I am convinced that the integration of the academic community and cooperation with local communities will result in the implementation of joint research and educational projects,' - says dr Krzysztof Szczepaniak, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Gdańsk.

CZRUG invites you to participate in thematic panels, during which there will be an opportunity to discuss with our experts:

  • Climate change: energy transition
  • Migration, health and sustainable development
  • Humanities facing the challenges of the climate crisis
  • Transformation of higher education institutions towards sustainable development

'The guest speakers invited to the conference are experts on sustainable development in various thematic areas. Mark Mifsud, Director of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research at the University of Malta, and Manuel Larrán Jorge, Rector's Plenipotentiary for Strategic Planning from the University of Cadiz, have confirmed their participation in the conference,' - says dr Elżbieta Czapka, Programme Coordinator for International Cooperation at CZRUG.

As part of the conference, on November 25, the Emigration Museum in Gdynia will host the panel Sustainable Polish? Narratives of sustainable development. The meeting will be devoted to how content related to sustainable development functions in cultural texts and the space of language, says dr Irena Chawrilska, coordinator of the Culture (for) Sustainable Development programme.

The conference will also feature discussions with young researchers moderated by researchers with extensive experience. The Centre invites PhD students and undergraduates to submit presentations under the 4 pillars of sustainability: human, social, economic and environmental.

Registration for the conference is free and takes place via a form available on the CZRUG website. The language of the event will be English. The plenary session, panel IV (Transformation of higher education institutions towards sustainable development) and the summary will be translated into Polish.
