A new point on the map of Gdańsk associated with the UG. Square named after prof. Jerzy Samp

Prof. Jerzy Samp, a historian and writer connected with the University of Gdańsk, became the patron of a square in the Orunia district. The official unveiling of the plaque commemorating the professor was attended by the Rector of the University of Gdansk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski. It should be recalled that a tram named after the Professor also runs in Gdańsk, and Primary School No. 86 bears his name.

The request to name a square in Gdańsk's Orunia district after the Professor was submitted to the Gdańsk City Council, Orunia-Św. Wojciech-Lipce District Council. On November 21 the plaque was ceremoniously unveiled. The event was attended, among others, by the family of prof. Jerzy Samp, the Mayor of Gdańsk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz and the Rector of the UG, prof. Piotr Stepnowski.

- 'This place is chosen perfectly, closest to our home. It was Dad's daily route to work, to the garage or to get the newspaper. He also used to walk this way with us, his children, to Oruński Park,' - said Christian Samp, the professor's son.

Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz drew attention to the rich achievements of prof. Jerzy Samp and thanked the applicants for another initiative that commemorates the historian's achievements. It should be recalled that prof. Jerzy Samp is the patron of Primary School No. 86 in Łostowice and one of Gdańsk's trams.

The naming is also linked to the modernisation of the square. PLN 50,000 has been earmarked for this purpose. By the end of the year, the Gdańsk Roads and Greenery Authority will announce a competition for a concept to develop the space.

Prof. Jerzy Samp began working at our university immediately after graduating from UG in 1975. Two years later he made his debut as a writer. His scientific interests were the history of literature and culture of Pomerania in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 1994, he has been the head of the Pomeranian Studies Department at the University of Gdańsk. He is, among others, the author of the books 'Legendy Gdańskie. Baśnie, podania i przypowieści', or 'Gdańsk. Przewodnik po mieście'. He died on February 16, 2015.
