The University of Gdańsk Trefl Sopot basketball team takes to the court!

The players of the basketball team Trefl II Sopot will play under the name University of Gdańsk Trefl Sopot. This is the result of cooperation between the University of Gdańsk and Trefl Sopot! On March 23, during a basketball derby in Tricity, in the presence of 5,000 basketball fans, the owner and founder of Trefl Sopot club Kazimierz Wierzbicki and the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski signed an agreement.

During Saturday's derby, the Trefl Sopot team crushed its opponent, Krajowa Grupa Spożywcza Arka Gdynia, 85:69. The match was watched by 5,000 fans, including University of Gdańsk employees with their families, who received tickets as part of the cooperation between Trefl and the University of Gdańsk.

At halftime of the match, the Rector, prof. Piotr Stepnowski, and the owner of Trefl Sopot club, Kazimierz Wierzbicki, signed an agreement inaugurating a new chapter of basketball in Tricity.

‘From now on, we are throwing into the same basket. We join the games not only symbolically; our most talented students will have an opportunity to join the team in league competition,’ says prof. Piotr Stepnowski. ‘I warmly invite the UG academic community to support the University of Gdańsk Trefl Sopot team!’

The first chance to see the University of Gdańsk Trefl Sopot team in action will come on March 27, when the team starts competing in the play-off phase of the 2nd basketball league. At 6:00 p.m. in Sopot's Hala 100-lecia the yellow-blacks will take on KSK Ciech Noteć Inowrocław. Admission to the match is free.

The cooperation between the University of Gdańsk and Trefl Sopot is aimed at popularising basketball among students of the University of Gdańsk, as well as promoting the university during national sporting events, such as matches in the 2nd basketball league.

As part of the agreement, players of the team under the new name will represent the University of Gdańsk at the Polish Academic Championships, while the most basketball-savvy students will be given a chance to play in league competitions.
