On 28-31.01.2021 in Warsaw, the semi-finals of the Polish Women's Futsal Championships were held. Universities from Zachodniopomorskie, Pomorskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie, Wielkopolskie, Łódzkie and Mazowieckie voivodships) competed for the title of the best team in the northern area. The University of Gdańsk players beautifully won their way to the Polish Academic Championship Final, which will be held at the end of February in Poznań.
The group phase started with a strong blow by Tomasz Aftański's charges winning with UMK Toruń - 8:0! In the remaining elimination games, the UG students also left no illusions about their rivals, winning 5:1 against SGGW Warszawa and 6:0 against the Medical University of Łódź. In the quarter-finals, the AZS women's futsal team defeated the University of Szczecin 2:1 and in the semi-finals UWM Olsztyn 2:0. In the match for first place in the Warsaw tournament two undefeated teams met - WSG Bydgoszcz and the University of Gdańsk. Two goals by Lidia Sowińska and one by Natalia Urbanowicz from UG were answered by one goal from Bydgoszcz. After the referee's final whistle, the scoreboard read 3:1 and it was the Gdańsk players who received the winning cup.
To sum up, the players of the University of Gdańsk in Warsaw played 6 matches, winning each of them. They scored 26 goals and lost only 3.
Furthermore, two players were awarded individual prizes: Izabela Pawłowska - MVP of the tournament, Weronika Wieżynis - best goalkeeper of the tournament.
'I am extremely proud of the girls. We went to Warsaw with the task of winning promotion to the final tournament and I am glad that it has been done and bit extra. Certainly, no one expected that we will turn out to be the best in the stakes in the north and the victory is pleasing, but we know that it is only the first step. In the final tournament, we will certainly fight for the best possible place and we will try to prove that last year's medal success was not an accident.' - says Coach Tomasz Aftański.
