On behalf of the academic community, the rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski laid flowers at the monument in Sopot dedicated to the fallen and murdered soldiers of the Home Army. The first of March is celebrated as the National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers.
Monuments dedicated to the fallen and murdered soldiers of the Home Army and the nurse Inka in Sopot were visited with flowers today by delegations from the local government, veterans and the University of Gdańsk.
As Marcin Skwierawski, Vice-President of Sopot emphasised in his speech, there are anniversaries whose commemoration is a civic duty, beyond divisions.
For the first time, the wreath-laying ceremony was attended by the University authorities: Rector of UG, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski and Vice-Rector dr hab. Arnold Kłonczyński, prof. UG.
- 'We owe the memory of the generations that fought for an independent Poland. Without this memory and respect for the history it is difficult to build the future,' said prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski in Sopot. - 'These people are not just characters from history books - they were and are among us such as prof. Jerzy Grzywacz - a retired employee of the University of Gdańsk, creator of the Polish scouting movement, Home Army soldier, Warsaw insurgent, as well as president of the Sea Branch of the Grey Regiments Association, president of the Pomeranian District of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers,' - added the rector.
