A scientist from UG in the Jury of the B. Malinowski Award of the Committee of Ethnological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences

Dr hab. Tarzycjusz Buliński prof. UG from the Faculty of History of UG became a member of the Jury of the B. Malinowski Prize for the best book in the field of ethnology and anthropology published in the years 2019-2020 - 'I perceive the choice made by the members of the Committee of Ethnological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences as a kind of trust on their part,' - he said.

Dr hab. Tarzycjusz Buliński prof. UG is an anthropologist researching the relationship between culture and education, especially in the case of non-European communities. He has conducted field research among Amazonian Indians on the functioning of school among indigenous peoples. He is the head of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the UG and editor-in-chief of the journal Ethnography. Practices, Theories, Experiences.

A few days ago, prof. UG Tarzycjusz Buliński became a member of the Jury of the Bronisław Malinowski Award of the Committee of Ethnological Sciences, PAN. The award was established to honour outstanding scientific publications in the field of ethnology and socio-cultural anthropology. The Award is under the patronage of Bronisław Malinowski, the most famous Polish anthropologist, whose momentous achievements gave him worldwide renown, becoming the foundation of contemporary social and cultural anthropology.

- 'This is the first time the prize has been awarded, so it will be of considerable significance. So far, there has been no prize awarded by the body that is the only official representative of all ethnological sciences in Poland - the Committee of Ethnological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences,' explains dr hab. Tarzycjusz Buliński, prof. UG. As he claims, the choice will be difficult given the large number of works that have been published in Poland in the last two years (professorships, habilitations, doctorates). - Ethnology in Poland today operates in eight academic centres, not counting museums and other cultural institutions. It is difficult to estimate the number of books that have been written, but there are certainly several dozen of them,' he explains.

The award will be granted annually, through a competition, to an author or co-author for a book publication of particular importance to the development of ethnological sciences in Poland, regardless of the academic degree, title and place of professional affiliation.

The right to nominate candidates for the Prize is held by university establishments, institutes of PAN, ethnographic museums and other institutions connected with ethnological sciences, as well as members of the Committee of Ethnological Sciences of PAN. The Jury of the Award consists of five members of the Committee of Ethnological Sciences, who are chosen by the plenary meeting of the Committee by voting.

The Jury makes a preliminary selection and nominates for the Award. In the case of comparable standards, a distinction may be awarded. The Prize has an honorary and prestigious character and may be supported by financial or material gratification.
