An article by dr Magdalena Lugiewska from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk was published in the Journal of Contemporary China, a journal with an impact factor of 3.126. The publication is the result of research funded by the University of Gdańsk's UGrants-first programme. The paper describes trends in dispute resolution resulting from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a massive economic and political project of the People's Republic of China called the new Silk Road.

The article is entitled 'International Dispute Resolution of BRI-Related Cases: Changes and Challenges' and was published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group Publishing. The paper attempts to answer the question of whether China's newly emerging institutions will significantly impact the international dispute resolution landscape. Are these new actors strong and transparent enough to compete with established international institutions? China is taking steps to provide a full range of BRI dispute resolution services and is proposing an innovative and holistic approach to cross-border disputes arising from BRI.

The study titled 'Dispute Resolution Arising from the Belt and Road Initiative', which served as the basis for the article, was funded by the UGrants-first. The University of Gdańsk programme provides support for PhD students and researchers to obtain their first research grant and to publish in prestigious journals or publications. Winners receive a grant of PLN 20,000.
