The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses the university's pro-environmental activities related to sustainable development and climate protection, attention to the maintenance of green areas, energy neutrality, the level of use of sustainable transport, optimisation of water consumption and waste management, as well as any educational activities for the environment. In this year's edition of the ranking, the University of Gdańsk was ranked 4th among universities from Poland, and in the overall, global ranking, UG jumped 100 positions upward compared to last year.

For the University of Gdańsk, its presence in this ranking reflects its efforts to build the concept of a green, sustainable university that cares about the climate and the environment.

This year's edition of the ranking involved 1050 universities from all over the world, including 11 from Poland (last year it was 9 universities), among which the University of Gdańsk was ranked 4th, behind the Gdańsk University of Technology (137th place in the global ranking), the non-public University of Information Technology and Management from Rzeszów (291st place) and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (299th place). Other universities from Poland reporting to the 'green ranking' are the State Academy of Applied Sciences in Nysa, the Academy of Special Education in Warsaw, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, the Medical University of Wrocław, the Cracow University of Technology, and the Vistula University of Finance and Business. Our university was ranked 528th in the world and this is a significant improvement in the global score from last year's 635th position. The highest marks were collected by UG in the Education and Research category, ranking 2nd in Poland in this criterion, respectively, behind the Gdańsk University of Technology and ahead of UAM. We scored a total of 5855 points, which is 1055 points more than last year.

The ranking has been published since 2010 when 95 universities in 35 countries were listed - now 1050 universities from 83 countries participate. This significant increase in the number of participants reflects an extremely important trend at universities around the world - a strong and growing awareness of responsibility for the planet and, determined by its condition, the fate of future generations. The strategies of universities related to environmental education, the research topics undertaken and the broader third mission to society through cooperation are built around this idea. Without the involvement of all these factors, it is impossible to think about tackling global issues such as climate change.
