The invention - new forms of Nimesulide, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug- was worked on by scientists from the Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdańsk - mgr inż. Małgorzata Rybczyńska, under the supervision of dr hab. Artur Sikorski, prof. UG was among the final 20 discoveries in the 10th edition of the 'Eureka! DGP - we discover Polish inventions'.

Nimesulide is a popular anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug used in dozens of countries worldwide, available in pharmacies by prescription. It has antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The drug is used orally in granular, tablet or gel form. Nimesulide has a much stronger effect than paracetamol and ibuprofen. The work of the UG research team has resulted in new solid forms of nimesulide in crystalline form.

Thanks to the development of new forms of the active substance found in the drug, its solubility has been significantly improved, making it more easily absorbed by the body. In addition, it is likely that in addition to anti-inflammatory properties, the investigated compounds may also exhibit anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, or possibly therapeutic effects in neuro degradative diseases, among others.

Part of the development work on nimesulide was funded by the Innovation Incubator 4.0 project, the implementation of which is coordinated by the UG Technology Transfer Centre.

We congratulate the scientists on their nomination to the honourable group of finalists, and we are glad that we can also support them in their activities related to the commercialisation of the invention - says Katarzyna Gronowska, Director of the UG Technology Transfer Centre.

The EUREKA! DGP involves Polish universities, research institutes and scientific units of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Until June, inventions nominated for the main prize are described in the DGP Magazine. The competition will be settled at a gala at the end of June, and a summary of the cycle will be published in the DGP Magazine. The main prize is PLN 30 thousand for the team working on the winning invention, funded by the Patron of Polish Science - the Polpharma company - and a promotional campaign for the university or institute worth PLN 50 thousand in the INFOR PL SA media (publisher of Dziennik Gazeta Prawna), funded by the organiser.

In last year's competition, the winners were a team of scientists from the University of Gdańsk and the Wrocław University of Technology (dr inż. Wojciech Śledź (UG), dr Agata Motyka-Pomagruk (UG), prof. dr hab. Ewa Łojkowska (UG))
