Scientific Integrity Officer at the University of Gdańsk

Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski appointed dr hab. Sławomir Steinborn, prof. UG as a Scientific Integrity Officer. It is a new position, involving the authority to shape and consolidate high standards of scientific integrity at the University of Gdańsk.

The main objective of the Scientific Integrity Officer, and the office he will be in charge of, is to take actions designed to shape and consolidate high standards of scientific integrity at the University of Gdańsk. Those include developing and promoting scientific good practice, conducting trainings and providing technical infrastructure which enables detecting cases of scientific unreliability. Professor Steinborn will be responsible for scientific transparency and supporting the verification process of accusations and doubts made against University of Gdańsk employees and doctoral students in matters of scientific integrity.

Prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski:

- Appointing the Scientific Integrity Officer (and establishing his Office) carries significance to improving and developing additional guidelines to train and support researchers and doctoral students of the University of Gdańsk in matters of scientific integrity. The experience and extensive knowledge of prof. Sławomir Steinborn in the field of law will be especially valuable at his new position. At the same time, it is an important step in rebuilding the public image of the University of Gdańsk.

Sławomir Steinborn – doctor habilitated of juridical science, associate professor at the University of Gdańsk, Head of the Department of Criminal Procedure and Criminalistics, since 2016 a Judge at the Gdańsk Appeal Court. He authored and coauthored over 130 publications on criminal procedure, constitutional law and European criminal law, including articles published in recognized periodicals and foreign publishing houses, monographs, commentaries and academic textbooks. As Alexander von Humboldt and Max Planck Institute scholar, he participated in the scholarship programs at Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in 2008-2009 and 2015. He works with researchers from Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and Spain, among others. From 2013 to 2016 he was a member of Criminal Law Codification Commission at the Ministry of Justice. Author of legal expertise for the Polish Parliament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and the Council of Europe. Member of scientific and academic associations, among others, Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum Governing Board Member.
