Meeting between University of Gdańsk authorities and Pomeranian parliamentarians

Representatives of the University of Gdańsk discussed the future of higher education and the challenges it faces with Pomeranian parliamentarians. This was the first initiative of its kind at the UG. The meeting was attended by members of the Polish Sejm of the 10th term and the Polish Senate of the 11th term.

Sejm members:  Piotr Adamowicz, Patryk Gabriel, Jacek Karnowski; Magdalena Kołodziejczak, Barbara Nowacka, Kazimierz Plocke, Kacper Płażyński, Agnieszka Pomaska, Magdalena Sroka, Wioletta Tomczak.

Senators: Bogdan Borusewicz, Stanisław Lamczyk, Sławomir Rybicki, Ryszard Świlski.

The Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, presented the current situation of our university, its successes, achievements, and results, but also the challenges we face on a daily basis. The Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education Quality, dr hab. Arnold Kłonczyński, prof. UG, the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, dr hab. Anna Jurkowska-Zeidler, prof. UG, the Vice-Rector for Research, prof. dr hab. Wiesław Laskowski, and the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Development, dr hab. Sylwia Mrozowska, prof. UG also spoke about the functioning of the University of Gdańsk and Polish higher education.

Obrady

On behalf of UG, the meeting was also attended by members of the University Council: dr hab. Anna Machnikowska, prof. UG (from the Faculty of Law and Administration), prof. dr hab. Małgorzata Omilanowska-Kiljańczyk (from the Faculty of History, Minister of Culture and National Heritage in 2014-15) and Bartosz Chojnacki (President of the UG Student Parliament). The former government member shared her experience and knowledge gained during her parliamentary term and pointed out that the effects of changes introduced in higher education can often only be seen after ten or even twenty years.

Representatives of the University of Gdańsk and parliamentarians discussed the future of higher education in Poland. Regional initiatives, such as the Fahrenheit Universities, and international ones - such as the SEA-EU alliance - were discussed.

The meeting occurred on November 17, 2023, at the University of Gdańsk.
