Polish Science Day at the University of Gdańsk

- 'Celebration of Science at the University in a sense takes place every day. Science is the essence of our existence as an institution and as scientists who every day unravel the sense and essence of the phenomena, behaviour, processes of the world around us,' - says prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of the University of Gdańsk. On February 19th we celebrate for the second time a new state holiday - the Day of Polish Science. - 'I wish us all, that our scientific dreams come true, and the effects of our research were recognized in the country and the world,' - adds prof. dr. hab. Wiesław Laskowski, UG Vice-Rector for Scientific Research.

February 19, was established as a state holiday in recognition of the achievements of Polish scientists, their efforts to learn the truth and pass on knowledge to future generations, and to appreciate the role of science in the creation of civilisation.

Nicolaus Copernicus' birthday was chosen as the date for the annual celebrations, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of astronomy. The initiators of the project noted that over the centuries science has provided a key impulse for intellectual, social and economic development. A unique role is played by the didactic mission of universities - starting with the Cracow Academy founded in 1364. Today's celebration is intended as an inspiration to follow in the footsteps of eminent Polish scholars and strengthen interest in science.

On the Polish Science Day the Vice-Rector, prof. dr. hab. Wiesław Laskowski draws attention to the contribution of all the researchers gathered in Polish scientific institutions to world science, as well as to the researchers of Polish origin working in foreign academic centres. - 'It should be important for us that "Polish science" is a part of this world science. It should draw from it, but also contribute to its development.' The Vice-Rector greatly appreciates the contribution and involvement of the university staff. - 'I would like to thank all employees of the University of Gdańsk, scientists, and those thanks to whom scientists can pursue their passions, for not stopping work during the pandemic and scientific successes reflected in numerous publications,' - he concludes.

According to the Rector, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, such celebrations draw attention to the place of science in the world, social presence and role of scientists, as well as their problems and successes. - 'And since we are talking about successes - I am glad that one of the persons in the film recorded on the occasion of Science Day by the National Academic Exchange Agency is dr Karolina Pierzynowska from our university,' - he emphasises.

Let us recall that as part of a series of short online presentations entitled 'Young Polish Science', prepared by the Hevelianum, it will be possible to learn about the passions, scientific goals and achievements of young scientists. It will be attended by dr Karolina Pierzynowska from the Faculty of Biology UG, who develops new therapeutic approaches in genetic and neurodegenerative diseases on cellular and animal models.
