It is with deep regret that we have received the news
of the passing away of
Professor Zbigniew Majchrowski
An outstanding historian of literature of the Romantic period and the 20th and 21st centuries, an expert in poetry, drama, and theatre. The professor also conducted research on the anthropology of literature, performing arts, contemporary media culture, and art criticism.
For 50 years, he has been affiliated with the Institute of Polish Philology at the University of Gdańsk as a lecturer, and before that, as a student of Polish philology and a doctoral student in Prof. Maria Janion's seminar at the Faculty of Humanities, later Philology and History, and Philology at the University of Gdańsk. At that time, he was Vice-Dean, heading the Department of Anthropology of Literature and Artistic Criticism and the Artistic Criticism Laboratory, which he established.
He initiated the award of an honorary doctorate to Tadeusz Różewicz at UG. From 2007 to 2019, he was a member of the Committee on Literature of the PAS, and since 2020, he has been a member of the Committee on Art Studies of the PAS, a founding member and the first president of the Polish Shakespeare Society, a member of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Society, the Polish Theatre Research Society, the Polish Society for the Study of European Romanticism and the Polish Writers' Association.
He has rendered distinguished service to the University of Gdańsk
and the Polish literature and theatre studies.
