University of Gdansk leading in the running integration event 'La Solidaire de Brest'

UG employees and students covered the distance from Gdansk to Porto to support a charity event organised by students from the University of Brest. With a total distance of 3082 km, the UG community took first place on the podium and showed the greatest commitment among all partners of the event.

The University of Gdansk joined in the promotion of the sport and charity event organised by students from the University of Brest. The initiative was organised as part of the European Universities of the Sea - SEA-EU. The aim of the cross-country team-building event 'La Solidaire de Brest' was to engage students and staff from SEA-EU partner universities in sporting activity. All you had to do from April 12-17 was register as a participant in the event and cover as much distance as possible by running, marching or cycling. You could do it alone or in small groups. Each kilometre covered went to the account of an organisation working for the benefit of people with disabilities. - 'It was not only a great integration of UG students and employees but also excellent cooperation within the European University, which we are creating together with five foreign universities,' - says dr hab. Anna Maria Jurkowska-Zeidler, prof. UG, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation.

As many as 256 students and employees of the University of Gdansk took part in the action, covering the total distance of 3082 km, i.e. 69% of the total distance achieved by all SEA-EU universities. This is the best result among all the universities involved in the project. Out of 400 participants, as many as 256 represented the UG. The result is all the more pleasing as the distance covered helped to raise 3082 euros for people with disabilities. The income from the charity run will be donated to the French associations Association des Paralysés de France (APF) and Handi'chiens (the guide dog education association).

The University of Gdansk was represented mainly by its sports sections, as well as by the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, dr hab. Anna Maria Jurkowska-Zeidler, prof. UG, the President of AZS UG Piotr Walczak and the Deputy Director for Sports, Tomasz Aftański.

During the event, a film was made at the UG to promote the initiative in the academic community and to promote the University of Gdańsk and solidarity in the SEA-EU project.
