The year 2020 is a special date for the whole University of Gdańsk because we celebrate our 50th anniversary. It is also a special year for the UG Faculty of Biology Biological Station. It celebrates both the round anniversary of our university and the anniversary of Sobieszewo Island creation, the place its located at. This year marks the 180th anniversary of one of the Vistula river branches , Wisła Śmiała (Bold Vistula) creation, which broke the dune embankment close to the Górki village and the 125th anniversary of Przekop Wisły (Vistula Cross-Cut), currently discharging majority of Vistula river waters to the sea. Those two river branches cut out the piece of land called the Sobieszewo Island.
The Biological Station has belonged to the University of Gdańsk since 1971. It was acquired by the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences from the Medical University. At the moment, the Station educates students, as well as school pupils and other recipients. The Biological Station is included in social program held by the Gdańsk City Council for the Sobieszewo Island inhabitants.
The Director of the Station, dr inż. Katarzyna Żołkoś described the history and natural values of the island in the local public television program, Dzień Dobry Tu Gdańsk (Good Morning Here’s Gdańsk), around 30minute mark.
