Elections to the Scientific Committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences, beginning their term in 2024, have concluded. Twenty-three UG scientists were included in the 71 teams that will form numerous opinions, positions, expert opinions, and forecasts over the next four years.
In an age of populism and misinformation, the Polish Academy of Sciences upholds reliable knowledge and is a significant forum for scientific reflection. It speaks out on issues of importance to society, such as climate change, nature conservation, public health, and correct Polish language. It reacts to current events and helps to understand the world. The PAN produces numerous opinions, positions, expert opinions and forecasts. They are developed primarily by the Scientific Committees, as well as by advisory panels.
‘97 male and female scientists ran for election to the Biotechnology Committee; 30 were elected, representing almost all national scientific units. IFB UG and MUG, as in the previous term, have two representatives on the Biotechnology Committee of PAS. It is worth noting that 47% of the Polish Academy of Sciences Biotechnology Committee is made up of female scientists,’ says the Head of the Department of Plant Protection and Biotechnology, prof. dr hab. Ewa Łojkowska. ‘The aim of the Biotechnology Committee is, among other things, to take positions on scientifically and socially important issues, e.g. unauthorised commercial treatments called stem cell therapies or the benefits of new technologies in the precise breeding of useful plants and the implementation of one of the Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 2: Zero Hunger.’
The Biotechnology Committee also included prof. dr hab. Boguslaw Szewczyk from the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG and MUG. Meanwhile, prof. dr hab. Natalia Marek-Trzonkowska from the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science (ICCVS) will sit on the Committee on Immunology and Etiology of Human Infections. To the Committee on Analytical Chemistry, the Polish Academy of Sciences has elected, among others, dr hab. Anna Białk-Bielińska, prof. UG from the Faculty of Chemistry.
As many as six scientists from the University of Gdańsk found themselves in the PAS Committee for Marine Research; that is 20% of the entire team! They are the Dean of the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography dr hab. Waldemar Surosz, prof. UG, dr hab. Magdalena Bełdowska, prof. UG, dr hab. Dorota Burska, prof. UG, dr hab. Mariusz Sapota, prof. UG, dr hab. Adam Sokołowski, prof. UG, and dr hab. Agata Weydmann-Zwolicka, prof. UG. The Committee deals with, among other things, the exchange of research results between science and the economy or the development of expert opinions for the needs of administration and economic, governmental, local and other institutions.
Researchers from the Faculty of History can be found in as many as three teams: Committee of Arts Sciences, Committee of Cultural Sciences and Committee of Historical Sciences. The former will include prof. dr hab. Małgorzata Omilanowska-Kiljańczyk and dr hab. Rafał Makała, prof. UG, the latter prof. Tarzycjusz Buliński, prof. UG, and the third prof. dr hab. Beata Możejko.
Five scientists from the Faculty of Social Sciences were elected to the four committees. These are: the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences prof. dr hab. Michał Harciarek - Psychology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, prof. dr hab. Cezary Obracht-Prondzyński - Sociology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, dr hab. Jarosław Nocoń, prof.UG - Political Science Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, dr hab. Dorota Rancew-Sikora, prof. UG - Sociology Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and dr hab. Artur Szutta, prof. UG - Philosophical Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Two scientists from the Faculty of Management will sit on the Committee of Statistics and Econometrics of the Polish Academy of Sciences - Dean of the Faculty of Management prof. dr hab. Mirosław Szreder and prof. dr hab. Paweł Miłobędzki. The third person from the Faculty who has also been elected to the Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences is prof. dr hab. Bogdan Nogalski (Committee of Organisation and Management Sciences PAS).
The representative of the UG Faculty of Biology in the Committee for Environmental and Evolutionary Biology will be dr hab. Katarzyna Wojczulanis-Jakubas, prof. UG.
